Who we are
This Residential Urban Garden concept is being developed as a project of CommunEcos, an environmental education non-profit. Since 2011 we've been based out of 2811 Hillsborough Rd., Durham, NC -on the edge of Old West Durham. The site is best known as the home of Recyclique, our creative re-use thrift shop [from June 2011 - August 2018], and the location of the EcoLounge where (as of spring 2020) we had held over 375 weekly or bi-weekly sustainability education events - often talks, slide shows or films on Friday nights or how-to workshops or skill-shares on Saturday afternoons, since 2011, continuing on Zoom during the pandemic.
CommunEcos explores how we can transition to a just, green, and more locally-based economy in which people and planet matter more than profits. For several years we worked closely with Transition Durham on several educational series - with a focus on themes such as local food, sustainability movements, community economics, renewable energy, and climate change. We are heavily volunteer-dependent. After Recyclique closed in 2018 the former shop space became office and meeting space for Friends of the Earth and the NC Environmental Justice Network.
We'd refer you to our old website, so you could calendars and descriptions of past activities and meet our board, etc. but it got hijacked by some robots. Until we recover it, feel free to contact Sandy at yikes.contact@gmail.com for more info.
